Monoprint is a fast and versatile printmaking
medium half way between paint, print
and drawing. Using the example of Degas’ marvelously virtuosic techniques we will
cover the four basic methods of monochrome and multiplate colour printing.
Working from the life model in the studio, with dramatic lighting, this direct and engaging
medium is capable of creating an astounding range of atmospheric effects. It is an excellent introduction to the more
time-consuming printmaking processes of lithography, etching and engraving.

the amazing riches of the capital’s
lesser-known collections, intimate in scale but equal in quality to the major museums.
This course will introduce the history of the collection, its particular strengths, and the
chance to draw directly from individual paintings and other artifacts. Studying artworks
at first hand is an invaluable means of discovering great artists’ use of subject
matter, composition, handling of medium,
and sensibility whilst making your own response. We will visit collections including; Apsley House, Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Courtauld Institute, The Wallace Collection, The National Portrait Gallery, and the V&A.

Working with a life model in studio settings,
students will experiment with collage, exploring
its various techniques and applications.
Collage was one of the twentieth century’s
most influential graphic innovations.
Originating with Cubism, subsequently used
by the Dada and Surrealist movements it has
become a staple of contemporary design and
visual culture. This course will examine the
wide potential of this mixed media practice
including montage, frottage, and textile collage
to expand the notion of the drawn line
into the cut and torn line. Materials used will
include found surfaces, photographs and all
drawing materials from inks to gouache.
