Monoprint is a fast and versatile printmaking medium half way between paint, print and drawing. Using the example of Degas’ marvelously virtuosic techniques we will cover the four basic methods of monochrome and multiplate colour printing. Working from the life model in the studio, with dramatic lighting, this direct and engaging medium is capable of creating an astounding range of atmospheric effects. Working with a life model in studio settings, students will experiment with collage, exploring its various techniques and applications. Collage was one of the twentieth century’s most influential graphic innovations. Originating with Cubism, subsequently used by the Dada and Surrealist movements it has become a staple of contemporary design and visual culture. This course will examine the wide potential of this mixed media practice including montage, frottage, and textile collage to expand the notion of the drawn line into the cut and torn line. Materials used will include found surfaces, photographs and all drawing materials from inks to gouache.
